Modbury

Modbury has existed since at least Saxon times, and takes its name from the Saxon for `meeting place` (Moot Burgh). The town is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

From the 1600`s to 1800`s Modbury was a busy town depending on the thriving wool industry, growing prosperous on the process of turning raw fleece into finished cloth. The wool trade declined in the 1800`s due to the introduction of power looms.

Modbury is a very small but perfectly formed Devonshire market town. It is centred, around the Plymouth to Kingsbridge road, between the Avon and Erme rivers, and is tucked behind some steep hills that shelter it from the prevailing southwesterlies.

The main street of Modbury follows the road up a hill and is lined with elegant old buildings hosting a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants which open onto raised pavements.

Modbury is an attractive mix of Georgian, Victorian and later buildings which can be found in Church and
Broad Street
.

There are three churches in Modbury, the 13th century church of St. George with its impressive stain glassed windows, St Monica`s, the Roman Catholic Church and the Methodist church.

The town has developed a reputation as a local centre for antiques and furniture.

In May 2007 Modbury made the news, by becoming the first plastic bag free shopping town in Europe.
