Kingsbridge
Kingsbridge is at the head of the estuary named after it and reckoned by some to be the capital of the South Hams and is the administrative centre of the South Hams. The modern town is made up of two medieval towns, Kingsbridge and Dodbroke, originally a quarter of a mile apart.
Kingsbridge and the lands around it passed into the possession of Buckfast Abbey sometime later after the Norman Conquest and in 1219 the Abbot was granted the right to hold a market in Kingsbridge, his monks selling their produce of honey, fruit, vegetables and thick cream.
A brief stroll around the town tells of its maritime past, shipbuilding, rope making and other industries have been Kingsbridge`s mainstay.
The town centre is laced with interesting lanes and passageways.
